Artisinal vs Agentic Generative AI Filmmaking
Share
I made this short film to see how the new Kling 3.0 Multi-Cut feature could help increase my productivity when making cinematic sequences with generative AI. This is my first project that was 50% hand prompted "Artisinal" and 50% fully AI conceived "Agentic."
Disclosure: I am in the Kling Creative Partner Program (CPP)
Generative filmmaking is about going from concept to final video as fast a possible to preserve the initial creative inertia and intent of the director. As degenerate as it sounds to traditional creators, "HAND PROMPTING" each shot can be a bottleneck in the workflow.
This brings us to the concept of "Artisinal Generative Flimmaking." Try not to throw up. Hand prompting and art directing each shot of the film is an important part of the process, time and budget permitting, it's the best way to ensure quality results.
But in 2026, I've been asked by brands to create AI films in a single day. From concept to final delivery. That is the reality.
I don't want to go as far as saying I am embracing fully agentic humanless AI video creation. That day is coming, probably by the end of the year, but I'm trying to maintain as much creative control as possible, all while meeting this deadline of 24 hours to make a professional video.
The Workflow
I create all of the main style frames manually using Midjourney, Higgsfield Cinema Studio, and Nana Banana Pro. From there I'll give Kling my starting frames and enable RAW Multi-Cut. 5 seconds for the starting shot and 5 seconds for whatever Kling wants to do. So this is half "artisinal" and half agentic.
Most of the agentic Kling shots are not usable, not it's fault, it's completely unspecified. But several shots that Kling completely dreamed up on it's own made the final film. They were usually a punch in detail or close up the original style frame. The close up of the water in the pouch was 100% dreamed up by Kling for example.
We are deluding ourselves as creators when we try to attribute a percentage of how much WE are creating and how much the AI is creating. I don't want to think of a number because it would depress me... 10% human at this point? Generous.
Yet until fully agentic AI Generative Video services can yield better results than human directed "artisinal" generative videos, we persist.
What a world.
Cheers,
Matt
